#SummerFun: Sidewalk Chalk Paint!

#SummerFun Sidewalk Chalk Paint

We may be stuck at home most days this summer, but the boys and I are having so much fun thanks to our #SummerFun list. Just yesterday we we made sidewalk chalk paint (#9) for the first time. Thanks to @InnerChildFun for sharing this simple activity on Pinterest.

All you have to do is mix equal parts cornstarch and water and then add a few drops of food coloring. They warn not to add too much food coloring. I used 6 drops at for each color. We made green, yellow and purple. Well actually I made them all, but next time I’ll let the boys helps. It may seem like the cornstarch doesn’t want to mix in, but just keep scraping the bottom and it will quickly dissolve.

Once our colors were mixed up and I grabbed some paint brushes, I swept the driveway and set the boys up. Wesley (2.5 yo) is really into art, but not so much Alistair (5 yo). Wesley just painted big splotches of yellow for the most part and Alistair made a puddle of green before he became seriously distracted by some ants. He stopped painting after 5 minutes to build the ants a house. It was pretty cute. I painted their names and a couple of shapes while Wesley added to my to designs. When it dried after a few minutes, it really did look like sidewalk chalk.

We painted until the paint ran out, which was too soon for Wesley and I. Next time I’ll make double (1 cup cornstarch:1 cup water) of each color. I’ll do more colors too. We’ll paint the whole driveway and make Dan park in the grass! I think I’ll draw some big figures (or trace their bodies) with chalk and let the boys “color it in” next time. I bet this would be a fun thing to do at your yard sale too. You could label sections, advertise prices or just welcome your guests. Too bad I already had my yard sale (more on that later).

I really hope you’ll try sidewalk chalk paint with your kids soon and check out my #SummerFun list for more boredom busters, like excavating dinosaurs! You can also follow my #SummerFun board on Pinterest!

  1. Super cute! Great idea. I’m so thankful the boys have such a creative mom to keep them entertained while learning about our world!
